Pittsburgh Panthers defeated Robert Morris at the Petersen Events Center 81-71 on Sunday.
The Panthers had four players in double digits including Ashton Gibbs and a game-high 21 points. Cameron Wright scored 13, Tray Woodall scored 12 and Talib Zanna chipped in with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Freshman Khem Birch played well again, posting eight points, 11 rebounds and six blocks in 29 minutes.
With Birch emerging and Dante Taylor not showing improvement (when he was healthy) you have to ponder how much playing time Taylor will be missing when he returns. It is diminishing by the minute. That’s a good sign for Pitt, though.
Pitt (5-1) held the Colonials (4-2) to 37 percent from the floor and 29 percent from three.
There is still plenty of work ahead for the Panthers. This game seemed closer than what it actually was. Pitt was up by 15-20 points for most of the game.
Pitt will get a real test in the City Game on Wednesday when they play Duquesne at CONSOL Energy Center. The Dukes play against Pitt players in the Summer. They won’t be afraid to go head-to-head.
Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
